FUTURAMA Fall 2024: RICHARD THOMAS REEP ARCHITECTS prints first 3D model

For quick visualization of the shape of the space, nothing beats a model

Historic Oviedo Colored Schools Museum, Inc. in Historic Jamestown selected as First Print

Approximately 175mm x 175mm print (about the size of a ham sandwich).of the Historic Oviedo Colored Schools Museum, roof off. (Roof is file #2).

The Historic Oviedo Colored Schools Museum (HOCSM) won a Florida Humanities Community Project Grant to create exhibits that will help tell the story of African-American education and how this structure fits into the community.

By printing this model we can better examine the facility and curate the story into spatial and visual display. Models have always been a part of our design process, and the link between digital and tangible files is forged a little more closely with this project.

We selected it because the building is spatially clear, already modeled in 3D, and required only a few minutes of cleanup and prep before making the .stl file.

In future posts we hope to update this model the roof and other features. Check back in! Also, if you have a particular 3D idea in mind, don't hesitate to give us a ring. We can quote printing at competitive prices and you can have coffee with us in our art studio while the thing's whirring away.

3D printing is considered "additive" manufacturing with the wasteage confined on the production end. While this does not eliminate waste, the end user, who is usually the least able to afford large waste management, has far less (mostly packaging for materials). Whether you compare the cost to make Strathmore and glue and cut down tropical balsa to build your model, and then populate it with deer moss, is any more environmentally responsible than a petroleum product. If a renewable substitute for ABS wire can be found, that may hasten the elusive goal of waste-free living.
