Orange County, Florida offers prototype designs for affordable housing
Would we live in one? Don't think so
Check out the affordable house plans for sale on Orange County's website. These are supposedly pre-approved for development like the Seville Plan shown here.
So dude, you're walking right into the kitchen. And there's a large amount of space with the windows devoted to circulation, meaning you can't do laundry naked anymore. The L shape isn't working for you here.
When a building is this small it would be best to keep the roof to all one unit. Theres a hard-to-get-at soffit up there with potential for critters. Also, a roof-to-wall flashing joint, hardly the most practical for those with budgets, never mind those who are trying to get affordable.
You still need to hire an architect and go through all the process of applying for permit and construction. However, if these designs are preapproved, at least one gets a sense of the kind of things they are expecting.
Readers, offer your own solutions to the housing questions of tomorrow. Remember to think carefully about how you really, really want to live. Some suggestions:
Do you really need a front door open to the street, or would you like to live more like rich people who have a little more protection?
Are you really going to leave your bikes out front? Come on, now.
In a plan like this, what does the Amazon guy do with his delivery when you're not home?
How do you play a decent video game in this house?
Where is the work-from-home area?
Why is there even a bathtub? Why not a nice shower area?
What makes affordability? What is affordable to you? How do you really live? We really want to know. Write rtreep@richardreep.org today.
